About Dan Moeller

Daniel Edward Moeller (1885-1951), born in DeWitt, Iowa, was a switch-hitting outfielder who bridged the minor and major leagues during the Deadball Era. He debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1907 and appeared briefly again in 1908, then dropped back to the minors, starring in the Eastern League with the Jersey City Skeeters around 1909-1911 - the very team and league pictured on this T206 card, which was issued while he was out of the majors. Moeller earned his way back with the Washington Senators, playing for them from 1912 through 1916 before finishing with the Cleveland Indians in 1916. Over 704 major-league games he batted .243 with 618 hits, 171 stolen bases, and 15 home runs, and he led the American League in strikeouts in both 1912 and 1913. He is also remembered for a 1914 outfield collision that broke teammate Clyde Milan's jaw and cost Washington's star its speedy center fielder six weeks of the season. A solid regular rather than a headliner, Moeller is one of the T206 set's more obscure minor-league-pictured subjects.
