About Jack Hannifan

John Joseph "Jack" Hannifin, born February 25, 1883, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, was a right-handed utility infielder who reached the majors in the 1906 season. He debuted with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics on April 19, 1906, then spent most of his big-league time with John McGraw's New York Giants (1906–1908) before finishing his major-league run with the Boston Doves in 1908. A versatile fill-in who played third base, shortstop, first base, and some outfield, Hannifin never got much of a chance—he collected no more than 260 at-bats in a season and batted just .214 with 94 hits, 40 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases across three big-league campaigns, his final appearance coming October 7, 1908. He was, however, a durable minor-leaguer, playing roughly eight seasons for clubs including the Norwich Reds, Springfield Ponies, New Haven Blues, Elmira Colonels, Holyoke Papermakers, and the Eastern League's Jersey City Skeeters—the team he is pictured with on his T206 card—before retiring around 1912. He died October 27, 1945, in Northampton, Massachusetts. On his card he is identified with Jersey City; Hannifin is one of the set's common minor-league subjects and is not a Hall of Famer.
