About Doc Marshall
William Riddle "Doc" Marshall was a light-hitting catcher whose brief major-league career overlapped with his real vocation: medicine. A Butler, Pennsylvania native, he came to pro ball late, breaking in at age 27 in 1903 with the minor-league Des Moines Undertakers after stints as a schoolteacher and clerk. He reached the National League in 1904 and bounced among clubs over six seasons, catching for the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Beaneaters, and John McGraw's New York Giants in 1904, then the St. Louis Cardinals (1906–08), the Chicago Cubs (1908), and finally the Brooklyn Superbas in 1909, where he backed up Bill Bergen — the team shown on this card. A defense-first reserve, he hit just .210 with 2 home runs and 54 RBIs for his career. His nickname "Doc" was literal: he studied medicine part-time while playing and earned his doctorate in 1909. Marshall made the roster of the 1908 world-champion Cubs but did not appear in that World Series. He later bought a practice in Clinton, Illinois, and doctored there for some 45 years until his death in 1959. He is a common, non-Hall-of-Fame subject in the T206 set.
