About Ed Reulbach

Edward Marvin "Big Ed" Reulbach, a right-handed pitcher born in Detroit on December 1, 1882, came to the Chicago Cubs in May 1905 straight off the college diamond, having starred at Notre Dame and then the University of Vermont medical school before making his big-league debut on May 16, 1905. Over 13 seasons he pitched for the Cubs (1905-1913), Brooklyn (1913-1914), Newark of the Federal League (1915), and the Boston Braves (1916-1917), compiling a 182-106 record with a 2.28 ERA and 1,137 strikeouts. His signature feat was leading the National League in winning percentage three straight years, 1906-1908, a run SABR notes was later matched only by Lefty Grove. Nicknamed "Big Ed" for his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame, he anchored the Cubs' dynasty rotation alongside Mordecai Brown, winning the 1907 and 1908 World Series and one-hitting the White Sox in Game 2 of the 1906 Series. On September 26, 1908, he threw two complete-game shutouts against Brooklyn in a single day, a feat no other pitcher has ever duplicated. Despite Hall-of-Fame-caliber numbers, he never received a single Cooperstown vote.
