About Johnny Evers

Signed off his hometown sandlots by the Troy club of the New York State League in 1902, the 100-pound Johnny Evers reached the Chicago Cubs that September and anchored second base for a dynasty. From 1902 to 1913 he formed the shortstop-second-base half of the fabled "Tinker to Evers to Chance" double-play combination, a pesky left-handed hitter and shrewd baserunner who drew 108 walks in 1910 and stole 49 bases in 1906. Evers helped Chicago to four NL pennants (1906, 1907, 1908, 1910) and back-to-back World Series titles in 1907 and 1908, batting .350 in each. He was the alert infielder who exploited "Merkle's Boner" to force the decisive 1908 pennant playoff. Nicknamed "The Human Crab" for his sidling, crablike way of getting to grounders (and, teammates joked, his prickly temperament), he later captained the 1914 "Miracle" Boston Braves to a stunning worst-to-first pennant and World Series sweep, winning the Chalmers Award (MVP). A .270 lifetime hitter over 18 seasons, Evers was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946. As a marquee Cubs Hall of Famer, his T206 cards are among the set's more sought-after subjects.
