About Carl Lundgren
Carl Leonard Lundgren was a right-handed pitcher born February 16, 1880, in Marengo, Illinois. A standout at the University of Illinois, he was recruited by Cubs manager Frank Selee and signed with Chicago upon graduating, making his major-league debut on June 19, 1902. He spent his entire eight-year big-league career (1902-1909) with the Chicago Cubs, one of the deadball era's great dynasties. Lundgren went 91-55 (.623) with a 2.42 ERA, completing 125 of 149 starts and throwing 19 shutouts over 1,322 innings. His finest years came during Chicago's championship run: he went 17-6 in 1906 and 18-7 in 1907, when his sparkling 1.17 ERA was second only to teammate Jack Pfiester's, and he surrendered just 27 earned runs across 207 homerless innings. He pitched for three straight pennant winners (1906-1908) and the 1907-08 World Series champions, though he saw no postseason action. Nicknamed "Lundy," he was also known as a "cold-weather pitcher" who fared better in cool spring air than summer heat. After baseball he coached at Michigan (1913-1920) and Illinois (1921-1934), winning five Big Ten titles, and Illinois honored him with Lundgren Hall. He died August 21, 1934.
