About Harry Lumley
Harry Garfield Lumley (1880-1938) was a slugging right fielder who spent his entire six-year major-league career with the Brooklyn Superbas of the National League. He climbed through the minors quickly, hitting .350 for Rome of the New York State League in 1901, then starring for St. Paul, Colorado Springs, and Seattle before Brooklyn drafted him out of the Pacific Coast League. Lumley burst into the majors in 1904, playing 150 games and leading the entire National League in both home runs (9) and triples (18) as a rookie — a home-run title so rare for a first-year man that only Ralph Kiner (1946) has since matched it. He posted his finest all-around season in 1906, batting .324 (third in the league) with power that ranked among the circuit's best. Named Brooklyn's player-manager in 1909, he guided a weak club to a 55-98 record and was replaced before 1910. A left-handed power threat in the Deadball Era, Lumley finished with a .274 average, 728 hits, and 38 home runs. He is not in the Hall of Fame, and appears on this common-series T206 card (series 150-350).
