About Fred Snodgrass
Frederick Carlisle Snodgrass (born October 19, 1887, in Ventura, California) was discovered by John McGraw while catching for St. Vincent's College in Los Angeles and signed with the New York Giants in 1908. Converted from catcher to center field, he became a Giants regular from 1910 to 1915, then finished with the Boston Braves in 1915-16. In his 1910 breakout he batted .321, peaking near .377 before fading in the race with Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie, and he stole 51 bases in 1911 for three straight pennant winners (1911-1913), playing in the 1911 and 1912 World Series. Over nine seasons he hit .275 with 852 hits. He is best remembered for the "$30,000 Muff" — dropping an easy fly by Clyde Engle in the 10th inning of the deciding 1912 World Series game, an error that helped Boston rally to the title and haunted him for life. After baseball he became a banker, rancher, and mayor of Oxnard, California, dying in 1974. A "350 Only" subject, his T206 batting card is notable for the caption misspelling "NODGRASS."
