1909–11 T206 Happy Smith

White Border
Brooklyn Superbas · National League · 460 Only print series

The 1909–1911 T206 Happy Smith is part of the legendary “White Border” tobacco set — The Monster. This card depicts Happy Smith, a member of the historic Brooklyn Superbas (National League), and was printed in the 460 Only series, known with 11 tobacco-brand backs. Across PSA and SGC, roughly 776 examples have been graded, with only 19 in NM 7 or better — a reminder of how tough this issue is in high grade.

About Happy Smith

Henry Joseph "Happy" Smith was a left-handed-hitting outfielder whose big-league career amounted to a single deadball-era summer. Born July 14, 1883, in Coquille, Oregon, he came up through Pacific Coast and Southern minor-league clubs, including the San Jose Prune Pickers, Oakland Commuters, and the Montgomery Billikens/Rebels. In April 1910 he came to Brooklyn in a deal involving the Chicago Cubs organization and debuted with the Brooklyn Superbas on April 15, 1910, at age 26. That would be his only major-league season: he appeared in just 35 games, batting .237 with 18 hits and 5 RBIs in 76 at-bats and no home runs, and played his final big-league game on July 22, 1910. Nicknamed "Happy," he remained a career minor leaguer otherwise and never returned to the majors; he died February 26, 1961, in San Jose, California. He is not a Hall of Famer, but as one of the obscure Superbas in the T206 White Border set his card falls in the scarcer "460 Only" print group, making him a modest name-collector target among the roughly 524 subjects.
