About Harry McIntyre
John Reid "Harry" McIntire, born in Detroit in 1878 and known variously as McIntire or McIntyre, learned the game in Dayton, Ohio, and broke into pro ball in 1900 with Danville of the Central League. After strong minor-league seasons at Memphis (20-15 in 1903, 19-8 in 1904), the Brooklyn Superbas signed the right-handed spitballer, who debuted in April 1905. Across five hard-luck years in Brooklyn (1905-1909) he pitched well but lost 20-plus games three times for weak clubs, including an 8-25 mark as a rookie. His signature outing came August 1, 1906, when he no-hit Pittsburgh for 10 2/3 innings before Claude Ritchey singled in the 11th, then lost 1-0 in 13 innings. Nicknamed "Handsome Harry," he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1910 and finally tasted success, going 13-9 and appearing twice in relief in the 1910 World Series against Philadelphia. He finished 71-117 with a 3.22 ERA and 17 shutouts over nine seasons, retiring in 1913. He died in 1949.
