About Carl Hubbell
Carl Hubbell, a left-hander out of Carthage, Missouri, developed his signature screwball in the low minors, where a young Detroit Tigers organization had him shelve the pitch before Beaumont let him revive it. John McGraw signed him for the New York Giants in 1928, and Hubbell became the ace of the club through the 1930s, finishing his career (1928-1943) 253-154 with a 2.98 ERA. His signature year was 1933: a 23-12 record, 1.66 ERA, ten shutouts, a National League-record 45.1-inning scoreless streak, and a legendary 18-inning, 1-0 shutout of the Cardinals on July 2 — a season that earned him NL MVP honors and carried the Giants to the World Series title. He won MVP again in 1936 after a 26-win season, and at the inaugural All-Star Game era's follow-up in 1934 he struck out five consecutive future Hall of Famers - Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons, and Cronin. Nicknamed "King Carl," "Old Long Pants," and "The Meal Ticket" for his dependability, Hubbell was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1947.
