1951 Topps Blue Back #37 Bobby Doerr

About Bobby Doerr
On June 2, 1950, Doerr was batting .232, and he finished the season at .294 with a league-leading 11 triples. On June 8 he hit three home runs and drove in eight in a 29-4 rout of the Browns. His 27 home runs matched his 1948 high, while his 103 runs and 120 RBIs were career bests, the RBI total the peak of a five-year run in which he averaged over 110. He made his eighth All-Star team and led AL second basemen in putouts and fielding percentage for the fourth time each.
Bobby Doerr played second base for the Boston Red Sox in all 14 of his seasons, 1937 through 1951, and ranked among the best defensive second basemen of his era. He led American League second basemen in double plays five times, tying a league record, and retired with a .980 fielding percentage, at the time the best career mark in major league history. At the plate he drove in more than 100 runs six times. His 2,042 hits and 1,247 RBIs were Red Sox career records when he retired, and his 223 home runs were then the third most by a major league second baseman. He hit for the cycle on May 17, 1944 and May 13, 1947, the only Red Sox player to do it twice. A nine-time All-Star, he led the league with a .528 slugging average in 1944 and was named The Sporting News Player of the Year, then missed 1945 in Army service and hit .409 in the 1946 World Series. Ted Williams called him the silent captain of the Red Sox. Doerr entered the Hall of Fame in 1986, and Boston retired his number 1 on May 21, 1988.
