1951 Topps Baseball — Interactive Checklist

Topps' five 1951 baseball issues in one checklist of 135 cards, 146 in the master set: the Red Backs and Blue Backs, two 52-card decks made to be played as a baseball game; nine Team cards, each with and without "1950" in the banner; and two sets of die-cut stand-ups, Connie Mack's All-Stars and the Major League All-Stars. The Boston Red Sox card is Ted Williams' first Topps card and the Brooklyn Dodgers card is Jackie Robinson's. Jim Konstanty, Robin Roberts and Eddie Stanky, the three rarest Major League All-Stars, are so rarely seen that collectors often count a complete set as 132 without them; all 135 count here. About the 1951 Topps Baseball set

Topps made its 1951 baseball cards in five issues, and this checklist keeps all of them together. The Red Backs and Blue Backs are two 52-card decks, each numbered 1-52 with its own players, made to be played as a baseball card game: every front carries a play result such as "OUT" in its corners. The nine Team cards each come with "1950" in the front banner and without it. Connie Mack's All-Stars are eleven die-cut stand-ups of the all-time greats Connie Mack picked, from Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig to Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson, and the Major League All-Stars are eleven more of the stars of 1950-51.

The Boston Red Sox Team card is Ted Williams' first Topps card and the Brooklyn Dodgers Team card is Jackie Robinson's. Jim Konstanty, Robin Roberts and Eddie Stanky are the three rarest Major League All-Stars; they count in the 135-card full set, though so few exist that collectors often count a complete set as 132 without them. On the Red Backs, #36 Gus Zernial and #52 Tommy Holmes each come in two versions, with a biography that names Chicago or Philadelphia, and Boston or Hartford.

The checklist runs to 135 cards, 146 in the master set: #36 Gus Zernial and #52 Tommy Holmes each come in two versions, and so does every Team card (Red Back #36 Gus Zernial: Chicago / Philadelphia; Red Back #52 Tommy Holmes: Boston / Hartford; 9 cards carry the Undated / Dated 1950 pair: Boston Red Sox, Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, New York Giants, Philadelphia Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Washington Senators). Owning either version of a card fills its place in the 135-card full set; the master set takes every version.

The five issues

  • Red Backs (52 cards) – Red Backs: 52 cards numbered 1-52, each with a portrait, a short biography and a baseball-game result on the front. #36 Gus Zernial and #52 Tommy Holmes each come in two versions.
  • Blue Backs (52 cards) – Blue Backs: 52 cards numbered 1-52 with an entirely different group of players from the Red Backs, in the same game-card format.
  • Teams (9 cards) – Teams: nine unnumbered team-photo cards, each found with "1950" before the team name in the front banner and without it. Either version fills the team's place in the set; the master set takes both.
  • Connie Mack's All-Stars (11 cards) – Connie Mack's All-Stars: eleven unnumbered die-cut stand-ups of the all-time greats Connie Mack chose, all of them Hall of Famers.
  • Major League All-Stars (11 cards) – Major League All-Stars: eleven unnumbered die-cut stand-ups of the stars of 1950-51. Jim Konstanty, Robin Roberts and Eddie Stanky are the famous rarities and count in the master set.

Scarcity, variations and errors

  • Short prints (None marked in this set) – No card is marked as a short print.
  • Uncorrected errors (0 cards) – Printed errors are noted on the card itself once the fronts are read.

What is not in the set

Items sometimes associated with 1951 Topps that are not part of this 135-card checklist.

  • Panels – Red Backs and Blue Backs also survive as perforated two-card panels. A panel holds two different cards, so it is not a separate card here.
  • 1951 Bowman – A different company's set from the same year.
  • Other 1951 Topps issues – Ringside boxing, Magic football and Animals of the World are separate Topps products.
  • Teams with no card – Only nine clubs have a Team card; the Braves, Cubs, Indians, Tigers, Yankees, Pirates and Browns do not.
  • Wrappers, boxes and proofs – Packaging and proofs are not cards in the checklist.
