1951 Topps Blue Back #14 George Munger

About George Munger
Munger started 20 of his 32 games in 1950, the last year of the regular turn in the Cardinals rotation he had held since mid-1946. He went 7-8 with a 3.90 ERA, pitching 154.2 innings with 5 complete games and one shutout. His 61 strikeouts were half the 123 he had in 1947, when he threw 224.1 innings and won 16 games.
Red Munger was a right-handed pitcher, 6 feet 2 inches and 200 pounds, who spent most of his ten major league seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (1943-44 and 1946-52) and the rest with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1952 and 1956). In 1944 he won 11 of 14 decisions with a 1.34 ERA before the Army took him in July, so he missed that year's World Series. Discharged from occupation duty in Germany in August 1946, he beat the Boston Red Sox 12-3 in Game 4 of the World Series, his only Series appearance. He won 16 games in 1947 and was a three-time All-Star, in 1944, 1947 and 1949. Pittsburgh acquired him in May 1952 and sent him to the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League, where he won 23 games in 1955 with 25 complete games and a 1.85 ERA, which earned the 1956 recall. His major league record was 77-56 with a 3.83 ERA and 564 strikeouts in 1,228.2 innings, and he won 152 games in the minors. He died in Houston in 1996.
