About this card

Connie Mack's All-Stars are eleven die-cut stand-ups of the all-time greats Connie Mack picked; every one of the eleven is in the Hall of Fame. They were made to be folded and stood up, so complete, unbent examples are hard to find.

About Grover Cleveland Alexander

His place on an all-time team rests on 1915 through 1917, when he won 31, 33 and 30 games for the Phillies, 94 in all, with ERAs of 1.22, 1.55 and 1.83. He led the National League in wins, innings and strikeouts in each of those three seasons. His 12 shutouts in 1915 came in the year Philadelphia won its first pennant, and the 16 he threw in 1916 set the major league season record, with half his starts in Baker Bowl, a park hard on pitchers. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1938. He died on November 4, 1950, less than a month after watching the Phillies lose Game 3 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium.

Grover Cleveland Alexander was a right-handed pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals from 1911 to 1930. His 373 wins tie Christy Mathewson for the National League record, and his 90 shutouts are the league career mark. He won 28 games as a rookie in 1911 and took pitching Triple Crowns in 1915, 1916 and 1920. He won Game 1 of the 1915 World Series for the Phillies, and in Game 7 of the 1926 Series he came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh, struck out Tony Lazzeri, and held the Yankees scoreless over the last two innings to give St. Louis the title. As a sergeant with the 342nd Field Artillery in France in 1918, he was left with partial hearing loss and epilepsy, and the drinking that had begun in his Phillies years grew worse. Born in Elba, Nebraska, on February 26, 1887, he was the only player elected to the Hall of Fame in 1938 and died in St. Paul, Nebraska, on November 4, 1950.
