About Dale Mitchell

Mitchell played 127 of his 130 games in 1950 in the Cleveland outfield and hit .308 with 156 hits, 81 runs, 49 RBI and 3 home runs. It was his fourth straight .300 season since he became a regular in 1947. The hit total fell by 47 from the 203 that led the league in 1949, on 134 fewer at-bats, while his 81 runs matched the 1949 figure exactly.

Dale Mitchell was a left-handed outfielder who spent 11 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, 1946 to 1956, and finished with the Brooklyn Dodgers. A contact hitter who sprayed line drives to all fields, he batted .312 over 1,127 games, with 1,244 hits, 41 home runs and 403 RBI, and struck out only 119 times in 3,984 at-bats. He hit .300 or better in six of the seven seasons from 1947 to 1953, led the American League in hits and triples in 1949, and played in the All-Star Game that year and in 1952. Cleveland won the 1948 World Series over the Boston Braves with Mitchell leading off, and the Indians took the 1954 pennant with 111 wins. In Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, pinch-hitting for Sal Maglie, he took the called third strike that ended Don Larsen's perfect game. He had signed with Cleveland as a teenager from Cloud Chief, Oklahoma, but a broken payment promise kept him out of pro ball until 1946, after Army service and a .507 senior year at the University of Oklahoma.
