1951 Topps Red Back #14 Wayne Terwilliger

About Wayne Terwilliger
Terwilliger won the Cubs second base job in spring 1950 and held it for 133 games, hitting .242 with 10 home runs, 32 RBI and 13 stolen bases. He was near .290 a month into the season, and the homers included shots off Curt Simmons, Don Newcombe, Larry Jansen and Dave Koslo. Late in the year his Michigan hometown and surrounding communities gave him a Wayne Terwilliger Day at Wrigley Field. After he hit .214 in his first 50 games of 1951, he was traded to Brooklyn on June 15 in the Andy Pafko deal.
Wayne Terwilliger played second base in the majors from 1949 to 1960 for the Cubs, Dodgers, Senators, Giants and Athletics, and spent far more years in uniform as a coach and minor-league manager. He batted .240 with 22 home runs and 162 RBI in 666 games. Before pro ball he served in the Marines as a radioman on an amphibious tank at Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. His best year came with the 1953 Senators: 134 games, 4 home runs and 46 RBI, including a first-inning homer off Whitey Ford on May 28 and a grand slam off Saul Rogovin on June 5. Ted Williams worked with him that summer, and Terwilliger later coached third base for Williams at Washington from 1969 to 1971 and at Texas in 1972. He coached first base for the Twins when they won the 1987 and 1991 World Series. At 80 he managed the Fort Worth Cats to the 2005 Central League title. He died in Weatherford, Texas, on February 3, 2021, at 95.
