1951 Topps Red Back #22 Bob Feller

About Bob Feller
In 1950 Feller started 34 of his 35 games and finished 16-11 with a 3.43 ERA over 247 innings, completing 16 of those starts and three of them as shutouts. His strikeouts fell to 119, about a third of the 348 he had recorded in 1946. The season still brought the eighth and last All-Star selection of his career. In 1951 he rebounded to 22-8, threw the third no-hitter of his career and was named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year.
Bob Feller pitched all 18 of his major league seasons for the Cleveland Indians, from 1936 through 1956, and Ted Williams called him the fastest and best pitcher he ever saw. He reached Cleveland at 17 without a day in the minors, signed by scout Cy Slapnicka for one dollar and an autographed baseball. In 1938 he struck out 18 Tigers in a nine-inning game, a modern record. His 1940 season opened with a no-hitter against the White Sox, the only one ever thrown on an Opening Day, and ended with a pitching Triple Crown: 27 wins, a 2.61 ERA and 261 strikeouts. He enlisted in the Navy two days after Pearl Harbor and served aboard the battleship USS Alabama, missing three full seasons and most of 1945. Back in 1946 he went 26-15 with a 2.18 ERA and 348 strikeouts, and he threw no-hitters that year and again in 1951. He pitched for the 1948 World Series champions and the 111-win 1954 pennant winners. He retired with 266 wins and 2,581 strikeouts and entered the Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility.
