About Larry Jansen

Jansen threw three consecutive shutouts in June 1950 and worked 30 scoreless innings in all. He walked only 55 batters in 275 innings, 1.8 per nine, and at one point went 31 innings without a walk. His five shutouts tied for the league lead as the Giants finished 86-68, five games behind the Phillies. In the All-Star Game he entered in the seventh with the National League trailing 3-2, struck out six of his first nine batters and allowed one hit over five scoreless innings of a 14-inning win.

Larry Jansen pitched for the New York Giants and Cincinnati, winning 122 games over 9 major-league seasons. After a 30-6 season with a 1.57 ERA for the San Francisco Seals in 1946, he joined the Giants and went 21-5 as a rookie, finishing second to Jackie Robinson in Rookie of the Year voting. Jansen made the All-Star team in 1950 and 1951. His 23 wins in 1951 tied teammate Sal Maglie for the major-league lead; the last came in relief on October 3, when Bobby Thomson's home run won the pennant. He finished his big-league career in 1956 with a 3.58 ERA. From 1961 through 1971, he coached San Francisco's pitchers, including Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry.
