About Whitey Lockman

Lockman hit .295 in 1950 with 157 hits in 532 at-bats, but only six home runs, a long way from the 18 he hit in 1948, the career high of a left-handed line-drive hitter and strong bunter. His 72 runs scored against 52 RBI fit that style. He played 128 of his 129 games in the outfield that year, before first base became his position in 1951.

Whitey Lockman played first base and the outfield for the Giants, Cardinals, Orioles and Reds over 15 major league seasons. A left-handed hitter from Lowell, North Carolina, he signed with the Giants in May 1943. Army service kept him out of the 1946 season, and a broken ankle in spring training limited him to two pinch-hit appearances in 1947. On October 3, 1951, his ninth-inning double scored Alvin Dark and put the tying run on base before Bobby Thomson's pennant-winning home run. Lockman played in the 1951 and 1954 World Series, winning the latter with the Giants, and started at first base for the National League in the 1952 All-Star Game. He finished with 1,658 hits and a .279 average in 1,666 games. He hit 114 home runs and drove in 563. After coaching for Cincinnati and San Francisco, he managed the Cubs to a 157-162 record. He later worked in player development and scouting for Chicago, Montreal and Florida, retiring in 2001.
