About Dick Sisler

Sisler played 96 of his 121 games at first base in 1949, then spent 137 of his 141 games in 1950 in the outfield. The move came with career highs in games (141), hits (155), runs (79) and RBI (83), and he batted .296 with 13 home runs. In the World Series the Yankees swept the Phillies in four games, and Sisler collected one hit in 17 at-bats.

Dick Sisler was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder who spent eight seasons in the majors with the Cardinals, Phillies and Reds from 1946 to 1953, batting .276 with 720 hits, 55 home runs and 360 RBI over 799 games. The son of Hall of Famer George Sisler, he broke in with St. Louis in 1946 and won a World Series ring that fall, then found his best role in Philadelphia, where he made the 1950 All-Star team and hit a tenth-inning, three-run home run on the season's final day to clinch the Whiz Kids' pennant. He closed his playing career back with Cincinnati and St. Louis before moving into coaching and managing, taking over the Reds in 1964 after Fred Hutchinson's illness and guiding them through the 1965 season.
