About Del Ennis

Ennis drove in 38 runs in July 1950, the month that carried the Phillies into first place. He finished the year fourth in the National League in batting at .311 and fifth with 31 home runs, collected 185 hits, and placed fourth in the MVP vote behind teammate Jim Konstanty, Stan Musial and Eddie Stanky. Sometime that season he ran down a Jackie Robinson drive in right field and caught it barehanded. In the World Series the Yankees swept Philadelphia, and Ennis went 2 for 14.

Del Ennis was a Philadelphia-born outfielder who played 14 seasons, 1946 to 1959, mostly as the power bat of the Phillies. He hit .313 as a rookie in 1946, made the All-Star team, and won The Sporting News Rookie Award. He led the National League with 126 RBI in 1950 as the Whiz Kids won the pennant, and had four straight seasons of 20 or more homers and 100 or more RBI from 1952 to 1955. Despite that production he took years of booing from the home fans, which he sometimes answered with game-winning hits. Traded to the Cardinals after 1956, he drove in 105 runs in 1957 and roomed with Stan Musial. He finished with the Reds and White Sox in 1959 with 288 home runs, 1,284 RBI and a .284 average. He ran a bowling alley in the Philadelphia area, which he had opened in 1958 with the Phillies' longtime traveling secretary.
