1951 Topps Red Back #25 Cliff Chambers

About Cliff Chambers
Chambers threw 249 1/3 innings in 1950, starting 33 of his 37 games for a Pirates club that finished eighth. His 12-15 record and 4.30 ERA led the staff in wins, and his 11 complete games were a career high that he matched in 1951. He also hit two home runs, one on June 8 off Brooklyn's Ralph Branca in a 4-3 win that ended a five-game losing streak. That winter he met Branch Rickey four times before settling on $16,000.
Cliff Chambers was a left-handed pitcher who worked 189 games for the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals between 1948 and 1953, going 48-53 with a 4.29 ERA. He is remembered for the no-hitter he threw for Pittsburgh on May 6, 1951, a 3-0 win over the Boston Braves in the second game of a doubleheader at Braves Field, in which he walked eight. Born in Portland, Oregon, and raised in Bellingham, Washington, he pitched at Washington State in 1941 and 1942 and signed with the Cubs in June 1942. About three years in the Army Air Forces delayed his start, and he won 24 games for the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League in 1947 before reaching Chicago in 1948. The Cubs traded him to Pittsburgh that December, and on June 15, 1951, the Pirates sent him and Wally Westlake to the Cardinals in a seven-player deal. He hit three major league home runs and finished with a .235 batting average. Chambers died on January 21, 2012, in Eagle, Idaho.
