About Herman Wehmeier

The 1950 season was the heaviest of Wehmeier's career. He worked 230 innings across 41 appearances, 32 of them starts, and finished 12 complete games. His 121 strikeouts were up from 80 in 1949, and his four saves were the most he recorded in any year. The price was a 10-18 record and a 5.67 ERA, with the 18 losses a career high. He also hit .152 in 92 at-bats.

Herm Wehmeier was a right-handed pitcher from Cincinnati who signed with his hometown Reds out of Western Hills High School and reached the majors as an 18-year-old in 1945. Over 13 seasons he pitched for the Reds, Phillies, Cardinals and Tigers, finishing 92-108 with a 4.80 ERA and 794 strikeouts in 1,803 innings. In Cincinnati he was a favorite target of Crosley Field boo-birds, and wildness was part of the trouble: he led the National League in walks three times, in wild pitches twice and in earned runs allowed once. Sold to the Phillies in 1954, he pitched better for Philadelphia and St. Louis, and on the next-to-last day of 1956 he went 12 innings against Milwaukee, allowing only a first-inning homer, as the Cardinals beat Warren Spahn and the Braves in extra innings during a pennant race. A sore elbow ended his career at 32. He later worked in the trucking industry and died in 1973 at age 46 while testifying at a trial in Dallas.
