About Grady Hatton

Hatton's bat slipped in 1950 even as his power held. After 537 at-bats in 1949 he came to the plate 438 times, and his runs batted in fell from 69 to 54 and his runs scored from 71 to 67, while his home run total stayed at 11. He hit .260 with 114 hits and 6 stolen bases, and 126 of his 130 games came at third base, with one at second.

Grady Hatton reached Cincinnati in 1946 without playing in the minor leagues, after attending the University of Texas and serving in the Army Air Forces. The left-handed hitter spent six seasons as the Reds' regular third baseman, leading National League third basemen with a .975 fielding percentage in 1949. He moved to second base in 1952 and received his only All-Star selection. Cincinnati traded him to the White Sox on April 18, 1954; Chicago sent him and cash to Boston for George Kell on May 23. Hatton was Boston's regular third baseman through 1955, then played for the Cardinals and Orioles before finishing with the Cubs in 1960. In 12 major league seasons, he played 1,312 games and collected 1,068 hits. He hit .254 with 91 home runs and 533 RBI. His first minor league season came with San Francisco in 1957, followed by three seasons as San Antonio's player-manager. He later managed the Astros and scouted for the Giants. Away from baseball, he raised cattle on a ranch near Warren, Texas, purchased with his signing bonus.
