About Eddie Yost

Yost appeared in 155 games in 1950, every one of them at third base, and hit .295, the best average of his 18 seasons. His 169 hits were a career high, up from 110 the year before. He scored 114 runs, double the 57 of 1949, and added 11 home runs, 58 runs batted in and 6 stolen bases.

Eddie Yost played 18 major league seasons and was known for his eye at the plate. A Brooklyn-born New York University infielder, he signed with the Washington Senators in 1944 and went straight to the big club at age 17, never playing a day in the minors, then lost 1945 to the Navy. From 1947 he held down third base in Washington for a dozen seasons. He was nicknamed The Walking Man for the numerous walks he drew. He led the American League in walks six times and finished with 1,614, which ranks 11th on the career list. His career on-base percentage was .394 against a .254 batting average. He also set American League career records at third base with 2,356 putouts, 3,659 assists and 6,285 total chances. He was the first third baseman to play more than 2,000 games at the position. Washington traded him to Detroit in December 1958 to clear third base for Harmon Killebrew; the expansion Los Angeles Angels took him after the 1960 season, and he retired in 1962. A 23-season coaching career followed, most of it in the third-base box, and he was on the staff of the 1969 World Series champion Mets.
