About this card

Each of the nine Team cards comes in two versions, with "1950" before the team name in the front banner and without it; the photo and the players are the same on both. Either version fills the team's place in the set, and the master set takes both.

The story on this card

Chicago opened 1950 under Jack Onslow, who won 8 and lost 22 before Red Corriden took over and went 52-72, leaving the White Sox at 60-94, sixth in the American League and 38 games behind the Yankees. The road record of 25-52 did most of the damage; the club was 35-42 at Comiskey Park, which drew 781,330. Chicago scored 625 runs and allowed 749. Chico Carrasquel, purchased from the Brooklyn Dodgers in October 1949, played 141 games at shortstop and hit .282, while first baseman Eddie Robinson led the regulars with a .314 average, 20 home runs and 73 RBI. Dave Philley played 156 games and drove in 80. Two future Hall of Famers sat on the roster: Nellie Fox hit .247 in 130 games at second base, and Luke Appling got into 50 games and hit .234.
