About Allie Reynolds

Reynolds pitched all of 1950 with bone chips in his elbow and still worked 35 games, 29 of them starts, for a 16-12 record and a 3.74 ERA. His 160 strikeouts were the most he had recorded in four Yankee seasons, and he made the American League All-Star team. In the World Series sweep of the Phillies he won Game Two, 2-1, in ten innings: Joe DiMaggio homered off Robin Roberts in the top of the tenth, and Reynolds retired the side in order after a leadoff walk.

Allie Reynolds was a right-handed pitcher for the Cleveland Indians (1942-1946) and the New York Yankees (1947-1954), used as both a starter and a reliever within the same season. Cleveland traded him to New York on October 11, 1946, for second baseman Joe Gordon. He won 182 games with a 3.30 ERA and 1,423 strikeouts, made six All-Star teams, and pitched for six World Series winners in 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953. In 1951 he threw two no-hitters, the first American League pitcher to do so in one season. In 1952 he won 20 games for the only time and led the league with a 2.06 ERA and 160 strikeouts, finishing second in the MVP vote. A member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, he was born in Bethany, Oklahoma, played football and ran track at Oklahoma A&M, and became an oil businessman after retiring. He entered the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1991.
