About Dick Kokos

Kokos appeared in 143 games for the 1950 Browns for the second year running and hit .261 with 18 home runs, 67 RBI and 77 runs, a step back from the 23 homers and 80 runs of 1949. He played 127 games in the outfield and stole 8 bases, his career high. The year was his last before army service in the Korean War, which took him out of the majors through 1952.

Dick Kokos was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played 475 major league games for the St. Louis Browns and, briefly in 1954, the Baltimore Orioles. Born Richard Kokoszka in Chicago on February 28, 1928, he began as a Cleveland Indians prospect and came to St. Louis on November 20, 1947, in a trade that sent Walt Judnich and Bob Muncrief to Cleveland and brought Kokos, Joe Frazier, Bryan Stephens and $25,000 to the Browns. He debuted at 20 in 1948 and hit .298 in 71 games, then drove out 23 home runs in 143 games in 1949. After the 1950 season he entered the army during the Korean War. He returned for 1953 and batted .241 in 107 games, and he played 11 games for the 1954 Orioles before being released after that season. His career line was .263 with 59 home runs, 223 RBI and a .365 on-base percentage. He died in Chicago on April 9, 1986.
