1952 Topps #319 Al Walker

About Al Walker
Albert Bluford "Rube" Walker — listed on this card as "Al Walker" — was a left-handed-hitting catcher born May 16, 1926, in Lenoir, North Carolina. Signed by the Chicago Cubs organization in 1944, he was an All-Star in the Class B Three-I League and the Double-A Southern Association before debuting with the Cubs in 1948. Chicago traded him to Brooklyn in June 1951, and he spent the rest of his career (through 1958) as the Dodgers' dependable backup to Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella. Over 11 seasons and 608 games he batted .227 with 360 hits, 35 home runs, and 192 RBI. Walker was behind the plate on October 3, 1951, when Bobby Thomson hit the pennant-winning "Shot Heard 'Round the World," and he was a member of Brooklyn's only World Series champions in 1955. After retiring he became a respected pitching coach, most famously with the 1969 champion New York Mets, where he mentored Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan and helped popularize the five-man rotation. As card #319, this is his rookie card and falls in the scarce high-number series (#311–407), the same run as the celebrated #311 Mickey Mantle — high numbers were printed in far smaller quantities and are prized by collectors today.
