About Andy Seminick
A durable, right-handed catcher, Andy Seminick left the West Virginia coal mines after a 1940 back injury and hitchhiked to a tryout, signing with a Pirates farm club for $75 a month before working his way up through Knoxville to the majors. He debuted with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1943 and played 15 big-league seasons, spending 1943-51 and 1955-57 in Philadelphia and 1952-54 with the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs (his 1952 club, pictured here). Seminick was the tough, respected clubhouse leader of the 1950 "Whiz Kids" pennant winners; as the veteran on that youthful roster, writers dubbed him "Grandpa Whiz" for having been with the team the longest. His best year came in 1950, when he hit .288 with 24 home runs and 68 RBI, then caught the World Series on a dislocated ankle numbed by Novocain as the Yankees swept the Phillies. He is also remembered for the August 12, 1950 game in which he bowled over the Giants' infield in a bench-clearing melee. Twice traded for catcher Smoky Burgess, Seminick finished with a .243 average, 164 homers and 556 RBI over 1,304 games. This card is a Series 5 short-print, printed in comparatively limited supply.
