About Red Rolfe
Robert Abial "Red" Rolfe (1908-1969), pictured here as manager of the Detroit Tigers, was a New Hampshire native who starred at Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, where he earned the nickname "Red" for his hair color while playing shortstop. Yankees scout Gene McCann signed him after his 1931 Dartmouth graduation, and manager Joe McCarthy shifted him to third base, where he became New York's regular starter by the mid-1930s. Over ten seasons (1931-1942), all with the Yankees, Rolfe batted .289 with 1,394 hits, 69 home runs and 497 RBI. A four-time All-Star (1937-1940), he won five World Series championships (1936-1939 and 1941) and enjoyed his finest year in 1939, leading the American League with 213 hits, 139 runs and 46 doubles while hitting .329. Known for keeping meticulous notes on opposing hitters, he became Tigers skipper in 1949 and was named The Sporting News Manager of the Year in 1950 after a 95-win, second-place finish; his tenure ended amid a last-place collapse the year this 1952 card was issued. Dartmouth later named its ballpark in his honor.
