About Paul Richards
Card #305 pictures Paul Richards, the manager of the Chicago White Sox, whose 1952 Topps card frames a man far better known for his baseball mind than his bat. A native of Waxahachie, Texas, Richards signed with Brooklyn for a $1,000 bonus in 1926 and worked his way up as a defensive catcher with a powerful arm, debuting in the majors in 1932 and playing eight big-league seasons for the Dodgers, New York Giants, Philadelphia Athletics, and Detroit Tigers. A light hitter, he batted .227 with 321 hits, 15 home runs, and 155 RBI over 523 games, but his signature moment came as Detroit's starting catcher in the 1945 World Series, where he drove in six runs — including a bases-loaded double in Game 7 — to help the Tigers beat the Cubs for the title. Hired to manage the White Sox in 1951, Richards laid the groundwork for the "Go-Go Sox" while earning the nickname "The Wizard of Waxahachie" for his innovations, from an oversized knuckleball catcher's mitt to early pitch limits. He left Chicago in September 1954 to become manager and general manager of the Baltimore Orioles and later ran front offices for the Houston Colt .45s/Astros and Atlanta Braves. In the set, his card sits just below the famous Mickey Mantle #311, near the start of the scarce, low-print high-number series (#311-407) that makes the set's late cards so prized today. Richards died in 1986 and is not enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
