About Warren Hacker
Warren Louis Hacker was a right-handed pitcher from Marissa, Illinois, who made his major-league debut with the Chicago Cubs on September 24, 1948, and went on to pitch 12 big-league seasons (1948-1961). He spent the bulk of his career on the North Side, wearing Cubs colors from 1948 through 1956 before later stints with the Cincinnati Redlegs (1957), Philadelphia Phillies (1957-1958), and Chicago White Sox (1961). Hacker's finest campaign came in 1952 — the same year this card was issued — when he went 15-9 with a sparkling 2.58 ERA and led the National League in WHIP (.946), a season strong enough to earn him 23rd place in NL Most Valuable Player voting. Over his career he compiled a 62-89 record with a 4.21 ERA, 557 strikeouts, 47 complete games, and 6 shutouts across 306 appearances. After his playing days he stayed in the game as a minor-league pitching coach, working in the Oakland Athletics organization (1967-1971) and later with the San Diego Padres system. As card #324, Hacker's issue falls within the 1952 Topps set's scarce high-number series (#311-407) — the run printed in far smaller quantities and famously dumped as unsold stock, which makes these cards genuinely rare for collectors today. Hacker died on May 22, 2002.
