1954 Topps #235 Vern Law

About Vern Law
Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1948 out of Meridian, Idaho — after part-owner Bing Crosby personally telephoned his family — right-hander Vern Law spent his entire 16-season career (1950-51, 1954-67; he missed 1952-53 serving in the Army during the Korean War) with Pittsburgh. His finest year was 1960, when he went 20-9 with a 3.08 ERA and 18 complete games to become the first Pirate ever to win the Cy Young Award. That summer he made the National League All-Star team and started and won one of the two 1960 All-Star Games. Pitching on a bad ankle, he went 2-0 in the 1960 World Series, starting Games 1, 4, and 7 as the Pirates upset the Yankees on Bill Mazeroski's Game 7 homer. A devout Latter-day Saint ordained a deacon in his church, he was nicknamed "The Deacon" (and "Preacher") by teammates. After shoulder trouble derailed him, he came back to go 17-9 with a 2.15 ERA in 1965, earning NL Comeback Player of the Year and the Lou Gehrig Award. He finished 162-147 with a 3.77 ERA and 1,092 strikeouts.
