1954 Topps #179 Gair Allie

About Gair Allie
Gair Roosevelt Allie was a right-handed shortstop whose entire major-league career fit into the 1954 season pictured on this rookie card. Born in 1931 in Statesville, North Carolina (d. 2016), he attended Wake Forest University and drew scouts' attention playing semipro ball before Branch Rickey signed him to a bonus contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 21, 1951. Allie reached the majors in 1954 largely by circumstance: with regular shortstop Dick Groat away on military service, the rookie started 92 games at short for a last-place Pirates club. He appeared in 121 games that year, batting just .199 with 83 hits (including 8 doubles, 6 triples and 3 home runs) and 30 RBI. Groat returned in 1955 and Allie never played another big-league game, spending the rest of his career in the minors (New Orleans, Hollywood and other clubs) through 1961. He earned no All-Star selections or awards, making card #179 essentially his one signature Topps issue and a keepsake of a single, forgotten Pirates summer.
