About Hal Rice

Harold Housten "Hoot" Rice was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a 17-year-old amateur in 1941. His path to the majors was interrupted by World War II: Rice served in the U.S. Army with a tank destroyer battalion in the Pacific Theater, earned a battlefield commission to second lieutenant, was wounded in the legs in the Philippines in 1945, and received the Purple Heart. Returning to pro ball in 1946, he made his big-league debut with the Cardinals on April 29, 1948, and over seven seasons (1948-1954) he played for St. Louis, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Chicago Cubs, largely as a reserve who backed up Stan Musial in left. His best stretch came after a June 1953 trade to Pittsburgh, where he hit .311 with 42 RBI down the stretch. A left fielder who threw right-handed, Rice batted .260 with 307 hits, 19 home runs, and 162 RBI over 424 games. His 1954 Topps card (#95) captures him during his final big-league season, split between the Pirates and Cubs.
