1954 Topps #139 Johnny & Eddie O'Brien

About Johnny & Eddie O'Brien
This dual card pictures identical-twin infielders Johnny and Eddie O'Brien, the pride of Seattle University, where they were basketball stars — Johnny became the first collegian to top 1,000 points in a season and scored 43 in the Chieftains' famous 84–81 upset of the Harlem Globetrotters on January 21, 1952. Drafted by the NBA's Milwaukee Hawks, the pair instead signed large "bonus baby" contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates in March 1953. That year they became the first twins to play for the same big-league team in the same game since 1915. After Army service (1953–55) they returned to Pittsburgh, where Johnny (second base, later also pitching) played 1953 and 1955–58 for the Pirates before finishing with the Cardinals and Braves in 1958–59, batting .250 with 4 home runs and 59 RBI over 339 games. Shortstop Eddie spent his whole career (1953, 1955–58) with the Pirates, hitting .236. Nicknamed "Johnny-O" and "Eddie-O," Eddie later became Seattle University's athletic director and a Seattle Pilots coach.
