About Gene Hermanski

Gene Hermanski, a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, signed with the Philadelphia Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1939 and attended Seton Hall University before reaching the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers on August 14, 1943. After Coast Guard and Navy aviation service in World War II, he returned to play mainly left and right field, spending nine big-league seasons with the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates (shown here on his 1954 Topps Pirates card, his final club). He hit .272 with 533 hits, 46 home runs, 259 RBI, and 43 stolen bases over 739 games. Hermanski was Brooklyn's starting left fielder on April 15, 1947, when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, and famously suggested teammates all wear No. 42 in solidarity. He played in the 1947 and 1949 World Series and, on August 5, 1948, clubbed three home runs in a game against the Cubs at Ebbets Field. He died in 2010 at age 90.
