1954 Topps #75 Fred Haney

About Fred Haney
Fred Girard Haney, pictured here as Pittsburgh Pirates manager, was a former big-league third baseman whose greatest fame came in the dugout. Signed off the California sandlots, he broke into pro ball in 1919 and had his contract purchased by the Detroit Tigers in 1922. A reserve infielder over seven MLB seasons (1922-1927, 1929) with the Tigers, Red Sox, Cubs and Cardinals, the stocky 5-foot-6 Haney batted .275 with 8 home runs and 228 RBI; nicknamed "Pudge" for his build, he was surprisingly fast, later leading the Pacific Coast League in steals in back-to-back years. He managed the St. Louis Browns (1939-1941) and the PCL Hollywood Stars before taking over the Pirates in 1953, where his young "Kiddie Corps" finished last all three seasons. His fortunes turned dramatically after this 1954 card: hired by the Milwaukee Braves in 1956, Haney led a lineup of Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews and Warren Spahn to the 1957 World Series title over the Yankees and a repeat pennant in 1958. He later became the first general manager of the expansion Los Angeles Angels (1961-1968).
