1954 Topps #76 Bob Scheffing

About Bob Scheffing
Pictured here as a Chicago Cubs coach, Bob Scheffing was a solid defensive catcher who reached the majors with the Cubs in 1941 after coming up through the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system in the mid-1930s. A right-handed hitter, he played eight big-league seasons (1941-42, 1946-51) for the Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and St. Louis Cardinals, hitting .263 with 357 hits, 20 home runs, and 187 RBI over 517 games; his best year came in 1948, when he batted .300 in 102 games for Chicago. Nicknamed "Grumpy" for his gruff demeanor, Scheffing later made his greatest mark from the dugout and front office. He managed the Cubs (1957-59) and the Detroit Tigers, guiding the 1961 Tigers to 101 wins and second place in the American League. As general manager of the New York Mets (1970-74), he is remembered for the 1971 trade that sent a young Nolan Ryan to California for Jim Fregosi. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was not elected to the Hall of Fame.
