About Howie Pollet

A New Orleans-born left-hander, Howard "Howie" Pollet signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and starred for the Houston Buffaloes of the Texas League—leading the circuit in ERA and strikeouts in 1941—before a mid-season call-up to St. Louis. He pitched 14 major-league seasons (debut 1941) for the Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago White Sox, finishing 131-116 with a 3.51 ERA and 934 strikeouts over 403 appearances. A three-time All-Star (1943, 1946, 1949), Pollet twice led the National League in ERA (1.75 in 1943, 2.10 in 1946) and was a member of the Cardinals' 1942 and 1946 World Series champions. His finest year was 1946, when he went 21-10 with a league-leading 2.10 ERA over a career-high 266 innings and helped St. Louis to the pennant and title, pitching through a shoulder injury in the Series. He missed 1944-45 serving in the Army Air Forces during World War II. Shown with the Cubs on his 1954 Topps card, Pollet later served as the Cardinals' pitching coach (1959-1964), earning a third World Series ring in 1964. He died in 1974 at age 53.
