About Willie Mays

Signed by the New York Giants in 1950 out of the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League, Willie Mays reached the majors in 1951 and won NL Rookie of the Year. Over 22 seasons (1951-52, 1954-73) with the New York/San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets, the dazzling center fielder batted .302 with 3,283 hits, 660 home runs, 1,903 RBI and 338 stolen bases across 2,992 games. A 24-time All-Star, he won two NL MVP awards (1954 and 1965) and 12 Gold Gloves. Nicknamed the "Say Hey Kid" by New York sportswriters for his habit of greeting people with "Say hey," Mays defined the 1954 season pictured on this card: he anchored the Giants to a World Series sweep of Cleveland and made "The Catch," an over-the-shoulder running grab of Vic Wertz's long drive in Game 1 at the Polo Grounds. Mays was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979 on the first ballot. This 1954 Topps issue is one of two Mays cards that year, as he also appears in Bowman's set.
