About Hank Thompson

Henry "Hank" Thompson (1925-1969) began his professional career in the Negro American League as a teenager, starring for the Kansas City Monarchs, where he hit .375 in 1948. A quick, powerful left-handed batter who could play second, third, and the outfield, he made history as the only player to help integrate two different major-league franchises: he broke the St. Louis Browns' color line on July 17, 1947, then on July 8, 1949, he and Monte Irvin became the first Black players for the New York Giants. Settling in at third base, Thompson was a key bat on the Giants' pennant winners, playing in both the 1951 and 1954 World Series. In the Giants' 1954 sweep of Cleveland he was superb, batting .364 and drawing a then-record seven walks. Over nine big-league seasons he hit .267 with 801 hits, 129 home runs, and 482 RBI in 933 games. In Cuban winter ball he was nicknamed "Ametralladora" ("machine gun"). A WWII combat veteran, Thompson's later life was troubled, and he died in 1969 at age 43.
