About Bob Swift

A steady defensive catcher, Bob Swift was born in 1915 in Salina, Kansas, and reached the majors with the St. Louis Browns in 1940 after breaking into pro ball in 1934. Over 14 big-league seasons (1940–1953) he caught for the Browns, Philadelphia Athletics, and Detroit Tigers, batting .231 with 635 hits, 14 home runs, and 238 RBI across 1,001 games while earning a reputation as a fine defender and handler of pitchers. He was a member of the Tigers' 1945 World Series champions. Swift's most famous moment came on August 19, 1951, when Browns owner Bill Veeck sent 3-foot-7 Eddie Gaedel up to pinch-hit; catching for Detroit, Swift dropped to his knees to give pitcher Bob Cain a target, and Gaedel walked on four pitches—an image forever tied to the sport's most unusual at-bat. By the time this 1954 Topps card was issued he was a Detroit player-coach, and he stayed in coaching for years afterward (Tigers, Kansas City Athletics, Washington Senators). He twice served as the Tigers' interim manager, going 24–18 in 1965 and 32–25 in 1966 after Charlie Dressen's heart attacks. Swift himself fell ill during the 1966 season and died that October of lung cancer at age 51.
