About Al Kaline

A right-handed outfielder from Baltimore, Al Kaline was a "bonus baby" who signed with the Detroit Tigers straight out of high school in 1953, going directly to the majors without a single minor-league game. He spent all 22 of his big-league seasons (1953-1974) in a Tigers uniform, primarily in right field, and remains one of the most respected one-team stars in the game's history. In 1955, at age 20, he won the American League batting title with a .340 average, making him the youngest batting champion in major-league history. Kaline was an 18-time All-Star and won 10 Gold Gloves for his outstanding defense, finishing his career with a .297 average, 3,007 hits (the 12th player to reach 3,000), 399 home runs, and 1,583 RBI. He capped his career by helping the Tigers win the 1968 World Series, batting .379 with two home runs and eight RBI in seven games. Nicknamed "Mr. Tiger" for his long, loyal association with Detroit, he had his No. 6 retired and was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1980. This 1954 Topps card is his rookie card, one of the set's celebrated "Big Three" rookies alongside Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks.
