About Ray Herbert

A Detroit sandlot product, right-hander Ray Herbert (born December 15, 1929, in Detroit; died December 20, 2022) was discovered by Tigers scout Wish Egan and signed with his hometown club out of Detroit Catholic Central High School. After seasoning with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, he debuted for Detroit in August 1950. This 1954 Topps card is his rookie card, capturing him during his early Tigers years. Over 14 major-league seasons he pitched for the Tigers (1950-51, 1953-54), Kansas City Athletics, Chicago White Sox (1961-64), and Philadelphia Phillies, going 104-107 with a 4.01 ERA, 864 strikeouts, 68 complete games, and 13 shutouts across 407 games. His peak came with the White Sox: he won 20 games (20-9, 3.27 ERA) in 1962, earned his lone All-Star selection, and won that season's second All-Star Game with three scoreless relief innings at Wrigley Field, retiring Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson, and Orlando Cepeda. He led the American League with seven shutouts in 1963.
