About Bob Ross

Floyd Robert "Bob" Ross was a left-handed pitcher (he batted right, threw left) born November 2, 1928, in Fullerton, California. He signed his first professional contract at age 16 in 1945, inked by scout Tom Downey after a Brooklyn Dodgers open tryout in Long Beach, and spent five years in the Dodgers' farm system — a stretch in which teammates included future Hall of Famer Roy Campanella and manager Walter Alston — before Washington drafted him. Ross reached the majors with the Senators, debuting June 16, 1950, and pitched for Washington in 1950–51 and later the Philadelphia Phillies in 1956. Over 20 big-league games he went 0–2 with a 7.17 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 47â…” innings; his lone major-league hit was a two-run double off Browns pitcher Jim Suchecki on June 9, 1951. Military service during the Korean War cost him the 1952 and 1953 seasons, which is why the 1954 Topps set pictures a Senator who was then out of the majors. After baseball he earned a degree from Long Beach State and became a teacher, principal, and administrator in the Anaheim schools, later scouting for the Houston Astros.
