About Joe Haynes

Joseph Walton Haynes (1917-1967) was a right-handed pitcher who entered the Washington organization in the late 1930s and debuted with the Senators on April 24, 1939, taking the win in relief. Over 14 seasons he pitched for Washington (1939-40, 1949-52) and the Chicago White Sox (1941-48), going 76-82 with a 4.01 ERA and 475 strikeouts in 379 games. His best years came on the South Side: he led the American League in ERA (2.42) in 1947, paced the league in games pitched and games finished in 1942, and was named to the 1948 AL All-Star team (though he did not appear in the game). In December 1948 he was part of the multi-team deal that sent future Hall of Famer Early Wynn and Mickey Vernon to Cleveland and returned Haynes to Washington. Married to Thelma Griffith, niece of owner Clark Griffith and sister of Calvin Griffith, he stayed in the family business after retiring, serving as the Senators' pitching coach from 1953 to 1955, the role pictured on this 1954 Topps card, before rising to executive vice president through the club's 1961 move to become the Minnesota Twins. He died at 49 of a heart attack while shoveling snow.
