1954 Topps #73 Wayne Terwilliger

About Wayne Terwilliger
Willard Wayne "Twig" Terwilliger was a right-handed second baseman born June 27, 1925, in Clare, Michigan. A Marine radioman who saw Pacific combat at Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima, he starred at Western Michigan before the Chicago Cubs signed him in 1948 following a Wrigley Field tryout. Over nine major-league seasons (1949-1960) he played for the Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Senators, New York Giants, and Kansas City Athletics, batting .240 with 501 hits, 22 home runs, 162 RBI, and 31 stolen bases in 666 games. His finest year came in 1953 with Washington (.252, 4 HR, 46 RBI), which included the only grand slam of his career and a homer off Yankees ace Whitey Ford that he called his greatest thrill. He was never an All-Star, but his lasting legacy is decades of coaching: as Minnesota Twins first-base coach he earned World Series rings in 1987 and 1991, and he later authored "Terwilliger Bunts One." He died in 2021 at 95. Fittingly for the era's craftsmanship, this card carries an uncorrected error — the birthdate printed on the back is wrong; his true birthday is June 27, 1925.
